A shocking revelation has emerged from Chicago, where a company specializing in ransomware resolution has been implicated in a sinister plot. The FBI alleges that employees of this very firm were carrying out their own hacks, a twist that adds a layer of complexity to the already controversial world of cyber attacks.
The story begins with Kevin Tyler Martin, a former ransomware threat negotiator for DigitalMint, and his alleged accomplice, Ryan Clifford Goldberg, an incident response manager at Sygnia Cybersecurity Services. Together, they are accused of orchestrating a series of ransomware attacks, demanding millions from unsuspecting victims.
But here's where it gets controversial: DigitalMint, the very company tasked with mitigating such attacks, has denied any wrongdoing and claims to have cooperated fully with the investigation. They maintain that the alleged crimes were committed outside their infrastructure and that client data was not compromised.
According to an FBI affidavit, the trio began their malicious activities in May 2023, targeting a medical company in Florida and demanding a staggering $10 million. While this was their only successful attack, they managed to extort $1.2 million, a significant sum that highlights the growing threat of ransomware.
Ransomware attacks have become an all-too-common occurrence, posing significant challenges for targeted entities. The malicious software can be unknowingly downloaded through simple actions like opening an email attachment or clicking a link. Once loaded, it locks access to computers, data, and files, with more advanced versions even encrypting this information.
To regain control, victims are often pushed to pay a ransom, a desperate measure that can cost millions. In this case, Martin, Goldberg, and their unnamed suspect are accused of targeting multiple companies, including a pharmaceutical firm, a doctor's office, an engineering firm, and a drone manufacturer.
Their scheme continued until April 2025, when the FBI finally caught up with them. Goldberg, during his interview with agents, initially denied involvement but later admitted to being recruited by the third suspect, known only as "Co-Conspirator 1."
Goldberg claimed that the $1.2 million extorted from the medical company was laundered through a mixing service and multiple cryptocurrency wallets, an attempt to hide the digital trail. He confessed to participating in the scheme to escape debt, fearing a lifetime in federal prison.
And this is the part most people miss: Martin, despite his alleged involvement in stealing over $1 million, was a speaker at the Technology Law Conference in May 2024, where he was described as a current DigitalMint employee.
Martin and Goldberg were indicted in October 2025 on charges of conspiracy, interference with interstate commerce, and intentional damage to a protected computer. While Goldberg was taken into custody, Martin was released on a $400,000 bond.
DigitalMint, in a statement, confirmed their cooperation with the investigation and emphasized their commitment to transparency, a key aspect of their culture. They maintain that the indicted employee's actions were unauthorized and that the company was not the target of the probe.
